Fixing a chattering key on a cheap keyboard

Oct 12, 2026

The E key on my mechanical keyboard started typing ee roughly one press in ten. Annoying in every word that has an E, which is most of them.

What didn't work

Compressed air, and a firmware setting for debounce that the vendor's app does not actually expose on this model.

What did

The switches are hot-swappable, which I had forgotten. Pulled the E switch, swapped it with the one under Scroll Lock, which I have never pressed in my life. Problem moved to Scroll Lock. Problem solved.

If the board weren't hot-swap, the next step would have been opening the switch and cleaning the contact leaf with isopropyl alcohol — doable, but fiddly with these clones.

Keep a couple of spare switches in a drawer. They cost almost nothing.
